Kazakhstan's men's and women's teams both successfully played their second-round matches at the 46th World Chess Olympiad in Uzbekistan. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.

The women's team defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 3:1, while the men's team beat Nigeria 3.5:0.5.

Women's team victory

It took just 27 moves for 15-year-old Elnaz Kaliakhmet, playing black on board three, to break the resistance of Masa Maksimovich. After the black rook moved to h4, white acknowledged the futility of defending against a mating attack on the kingside.

Meruert Kamalidenova, playing on board two, defeated Masa Babić on move 46. Bibisara Assaubayeva, who missed the first round, and Zarina Nurgaliyeva drew their games.

Following the victory over Botswana (4:0), Kazakhstan's women's team defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 3:1. And, like many other teams, they have accumulated 4 team points.

After victories over Haiti (4:0) and Nigeria (3.5:0.5), Kazakhstan's men's team also has four team points. Aldiyar Ansat and Zhandos Agmanov each won two games in Samarkand. Denis Makhnev, who entered the fray on board one in the second round, won for the first time. Daniyal Sapenov drew his game.

About the tournament

398 teams, 1974 chess players, and 240 grandmasters are participating in the 46th World Chess Olympiad in Samarkand.

The tournament is held according to the Swiss system in 11 rounds. Each team consists of 4 players and 1 reserve. The time control is classical – 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, plus another 30 minutes. After each move, 30 seconds are added.

For a victory in a match, a team receives two team points, for a draw – one. In case of equality of points, additional indicators come into force — the Berger coefficient (the number of points scored by opponents), as well as the sum of individual points of each team member.

The winners of the men's tournament are awarded the Lord Frederick Gustavus Hamilton-Russell Cup, and the women's – the Vera Menchik Cup. The federation that becomes the best by the lowest sum of places of both teams is awarded the Nona Gaprindashvili Cup.
