In early June 2026, Minister of Education Zuldyz Suleimenova announced the introduction of new subjects 'Fundamentals of the Constitution', 'Law and Order', 'Personal Safety', and an increase in hours for 'Geography of Kazakhstan' in schools. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
The ministry reminded that the course 'Fundamentals of the Constitution' will be studied by students in grades 5-7, and 'Law and Order' in grades 8-11. Also, from the new academic year, the subject 'Geography of Kazakhstan' for 8th and 9th graders will be taught two hours per week.
The Ministry of Education noted that the introduction of mandatory courses will not increase the academic load, as they will be taught within the already approved teaching hours.
At the same time, the ministry has already developed standard curricula for the new disciplines, which are currently undergoing expert review.
'Standard curricula and methodological recommendations have been developed by the National Academy of Education named after Y. Altynsarin of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan,' the ministry added.
The Ministry of Education explained that the new course will help Kazakhstani schoolchildren develop emotional intelligence and communication skills, as well as teach them safe behavior and care for their psychological health. Lessons will be conducted in the format of trainings.
'The course does not require a book edition for each student, as it takes place in the format of trainings, interactive games, group discussions, and reflective practices,' the ministry clarified.
The author of the curricula for the course is a subordinate organization of the Ministry of Education — NJSC 'National Scientific and Practical Institute for Child Welfare 'Orken'.
In addition, the editorial board asked the ministry about the fate of the subject 'Russian Literature'. Specifically, whether there are plans to rename it to 'World Literature' and expand the program to include works of foreign classics, which is often discussed in Kazakh society. However, the Ministry of Education left this question unanswered.
Earlier, Kursiv reported that new subjects would be introduced in Kazakhstan schools.
