An extraordinary congress of the People's Party of Kazakhstan was held in Astana. Delegates elected Nurlan Shokanov as the new chairman of the party. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.

Former chairman Yermukhamet Yertisbayev addressed the congress participants and summarized the work over the past three years. According to him, faction deputies have sent 591 deputy inquiries to the government since the beginning of the eighth convocation, addressing the most pressing issues of citizens. During this period, the ranks of the People's Party of Kazakhstan were replenished by more than 43,000 supporters.

Yertisbayev also commented on the change of party leadership. He noted that renewal is a natural stage in the development of any political organization, especially important in the context of large-scale political changes in Kazakhstan after the adoption of the new Constitution.

Based on the voting results, delegates elected Nurlan Shokanov as chairman of the People's Party of Kazakhstan.

Who is Nurlan Shokanov?

He was born in 1986 in Almaty. He graduated from the Kazakhstan Institute of Management, Economics and Forecasting (KIMEP) with a degree in Finance, and later earned an Executive MBA from IMD Business School in Switzerland.

He began his career at the international audit company Ernst & Young. He then held managerial positions at the oil service company Sandrilling, responsible for corporate finance, administrative management, mergers and acquisitions (M&A) projects, as well as crisis management.

Since 2009, he has been engaged in entrepreneurship. He chairs the board of directors of the OMIR Group, a group of companies operating in public catering, food delivery, retail, information technology, production, and distribution. Today, the group's enterprises operate in 6 cities of Kazakhstan and 4 foreign countries.

Since 2021, he has been elected as a deputy of the Almaty City Maslikhat of the 7th and 8th convocations from the People's Party of Kazakhstan, heading specialized commissions on construction, architecture, urban infrastructure, urban planning, and land relations. Since December 2022, he has led the Almaty city and then the Almaty regional branches of the People's Party of Kazakhstan. In 2023, he headed the Atameken Regional Chamber of Entrepreneurs of Almaty, and later was elected a member of the Board – Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Atameken National Chamber of Entrepreneurs of Kazakhstan.
