As of May 2026, the total volume of loans extended to Kazakhstan's economy reached 51.5 trillion tenge. This is an increase of 17.8% or 7.8 trillion tenge compared to the previous year. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.

Of this growth, 6.4 trillion tenge or about 82% came from banks. The banks' loan portfolio increased to 43.8 trillion tenge, providing 85% of all lending.

Growth in the non-banking sector was mainly due to quasi-state organizations. Their loan portfolio grew by 39.5% to 4.3 trillion tenge. Microfinance organizations' loan portfolio grew by 7.2% to 3.2 trillion tenge. Mortgage organizations' portfolio, on the contrary, decreased by 5.2%.

Business lending volume is increasing

Loans to businesses from all credit organizations in Kazakhstan grew by 20.5% over the year to 24.2 trillion tenge. Loans to the population grew by 15.5% or 3.7 trillion tenge over the year. Most of these loans were issued in national currency. As a result, the share of retail loans in total lending decreased from 54% to 53%. This indicates a gradual increase in the role of business lending.

Changes in the bank loan portfolio

As of June 1, 2026, the loan portfolio of second-tier banks and the Development Bank of Kazakhstan directed to the economy reached 44.5 trillion tenge. Over the year, this figure grew by 17% or 6.5 trillion tenge.

Changes are also observed in the structure of the bank portfolio: the share of the business segment is increasing. Loans to businesses from second-tier banks and the Development Bank of Kazakhstan grew by 19.4% to 19 trillion tenge. This is higher than the growth of retail loans (15.3%). As a result, the share of business lending in the total bank portfolio increased from 41.8% to 42.7%. The share of loans to the population decreased from 58.2% to 57.3%.

The fastest-growing segment of bank support is small business. Loans to small businesses grew by 34% or 2.3 trillion tenge, reaching 8.9 trillion tenge. As a result, the share of small business in the bank portfolio increased from 17.5% to 20% over the year. Its share in total business lending increased from 41.8% to 46.9%.

Loans to medium-sized businesses also showed high growth: an increase of 22.8%, volume – 3.1 trillion tenge. Loans to large enterprises grew by only 3.7% to 7 trillion tenge.

The retail loan portfolio reached 25.5 trillion tenge. Including: consumer loans – 17.1 trillion tenge (+14.3%), mortgage loans – 7.3 trillion tenge (+16.7%).

Loans of second-tier banks

As of the end of May 2026, the volume of loans from second-tier banks to the economy reached 41.3 trillion tenge. Long-term loans predominate by maturity. Their volume grew by 17.2% or 5.2 trillion tenge to 35.6 trillion tenge. Their share in the total portfolio increased from 85.6% to 86.3%.

By borrower category, the largest segment is individuals. Their loan portfolio grew by 16.4% or 4.1 trillion tenge to 28.7 trillion tenge. Loans to legal entities grew by 16% to 12.5 trillion tenge. Loans to enterprises, including individual entrepreneurs for business purposes, grew by 18% to 15.8 trillion tenge. As a result, their share in the total loan portfolio of second-tier banks increased from 37.7% to 38.3%.
