Kazakhstan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that it welcomes the United Arab Emirates' (UAE) nomination of Lana Zaki Nusseibeh for the position of UN Secretary-General. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.
Lana Zaki Nusseibeh currently serves as the UAE's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and is also a former Permanent Representative of the UAE to the United Nations.
The ministry noted that there are certain difficulties in reaching a common agreement in the Security Council, as evidenced by the results of previous stages of informal voting.
"In this regard, Kazakhstan welcomes the expansion of the pool of candidates and considers this as an additional opportunity to continue a constructive dialogue and to search for a mutually acceptable solution. For its part, Kazakhstan consistently advocates strengthening the central role of the UN in international relations, enhancing the effectiveness of its activities and improving multilateral mechanisms aimed at responding to global challenges," the Foreign Ministry stated.
Foreign Minister Mukhtar Tileuberdi had previously noted that the election of the UN Secretary-General would be one of the important events of the session. He emphasized that Kazakhstan supports an open, inclusive selection process fully in line with the UN Charter and based on the professional qualities of the candidates.
