Kazakhstan's basketball players lost to China 61:99 in their first Group C match at the Asian Games in Japan. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.

Alexander Lysyak's charges lost to the favorites in all four quarters – 12:31, 19:27, 13:21, 17:20. The gap from the winners ultimately amounted to 38 points.

The top scorer for Kazakhstan was center Askar Maidekin with 11 points. Daniil Severgin scored 10. The best for the opponents was Zhenglin Pang with 19 points.

Two teams from each quartet, as well as the two best teams among those finishing third, will advance to the quarterfinals.

Official opening of the Games

The official opening of the Games will take place on September 19. The next day, the final and the 3rd-place match in classic men's 5x5 basketball will be played. In addition, the Games program includes a women's 5x5 tournament, as well as men's and women's 3x3 competitions.

Kazakhstan's basketball players have been participating in the Asian Games since 1994. At the 2002 Games in the South Korean city of Busan, our team won bronze. In 1998 and 2014, Kazakhstan's basketball players were fourth.

China has won the tournament most often – 8 times. The current champion of the Games is the Philippines. So the opponents in our team's group are serious.

XX Summer Asian Games

The XX Summer Asian Games will be held in the Japanese city of Nagoya from September 19 to October 4. In the multi-sport competitions with the participation of athletes from 45 countries, 460 sets of medals will be awarded. 217 – among men, 204 – among women and 39 – in mixed categories. The tournaments will be held in 68 disciplines of 41 sports.

More than 500 athletes will represent Kazakhstan at the Games.
