Kazakhstan's military will clear a section of the Caspian Sea of mines to build underwater oil pipelines. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.
This is stipulated in a draft amendment to the Tax Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan, published for public discussion until September 25.
"The Ministry of Defense of Kazakhstan will carry out demining work in area No. 200 in the Kazakhstan sector of the Caspian Sea, through which the planned underwater oil pipelines of the "Kalamkas-Sea and Khazar" investment project will pass," the draft says.
A memorandum of cooperation between the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Energy and Kalamkas-Khazar Operating was signed in May 2025.
To carry out the demining work, the company will purchase the necessary specialized equipment and transfer it to the ownership of the Ministry of Defense.
The "Kalamkas-Sea" and "Khazar" projects combine two closely located offshore fields on the Caspian shelf.
The estimated reserves of the "Kalamkas-Sea" and "Khazar" fields amount to 81 million tons of oil, while the total reserves of Kalamkas-Sea alone are estimated at 284.5 million tons.
Additionally, the two fields contain approximately 19 billion cubic meters of gas.
The new tax code came into force in Kazakhstan on January 1.
