Today the country celebrates the Day of Kazakh Cinema. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.
This holiday has been observed since 2005. On September 12, 1941, by a decree of the Council of People's Commissars of the Kazakh SSR, the Alma-Ata Film Studio was established. In 1960, the studio was renamed "Kazakhfilm," and in 1984 it was named after the outstanding figure of Kazakh cinematography, Shaken Aimanov.
The initiative to celebrate the Day of Kazakh Cinema in 2005 was proposed by Baurzhan Nugerbekov, who headed the Union of Cinematographers of Kazakhstan. Since then, on September 12, the "Day of Kazakh Cinema" has been celebrated annually.
On the occasion of the Day of Kazakh Cinema, Minister of Culture and Information Arman Kyrykbaev addressed the development of the domestic film industry and upcoming tasks. According to the minister, in recent years, mechanisms of state support for the film industry have been improved, with priority given to enhancing the potential of the Shaken Aimanov National Film Studio "Kazakhfilm."
It is also planned to merge "Kazakhfilm" and the State Center for Support of National Cinema. The volume of domestic film production is also growing. While 94 films were shot in 2024, 103 Kazakhstani works were released in 2025.
In addition, work continues on the digitization and restoration of films from the golden fund of Kazakh cinema. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding director Abdolla Karsakbaev. The anniversary has been included in the UNESCO calendar of significant dates and anniversaries.
The minister noted that Kazakh cinema needs new names and fresh ideas, quality works that will find a place in the hearts of viewers and make Kazakhstan known on the international stage.
