In Karaganda, a 19-day-old child with a critical congenital heart defect underwent surgery. The situation was complicated by the fact that shortly before, the baby had undergone surgery on the intestines. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
Who performed the operation
The delicate work was carried out by local surgeons together with specialists from the UMC cardiocenter in the capital. According to the regional akimat, the baby was found to have a severe complex of heart defects. Due to improperly formed vessels, blood from the lungs could not flow normally into the organ, and unclosed holes remained inside the heart itself.
The situation was complicated by the fact that the infant was already weakened — shortly before, he had undergone surgery on the intestines.
Who was involved
The operation on the tiny heart was performed jointly by the heads of pediatric cardiac surgery — local doctor Ganibek Akzhanov and capital specialist from UMC Dmitry Gorbunov. A whole team also fought for the child's life: a cardiologist, a resuscitator and a doctor responsible for artificial blood circulation (a perfusionist).
"The goal of the master class is for such children to be operated on here, in Karaganda, and not to waste time on transportation to the republican center," noted Ganibek Akzhanov.
Significance for the region
The akimat emphasized that this is a huge step for pediatric cardiac surgery in the region — such complex interventions had not been performed here for many years. Capital doctors passed on their experience to Karaganda surgeons, and now newborns with severe heart defects will be saved on site.
Earlier, Kursiv reported that the Ministry of Health and the Israeli Berman Group intend to launch a new format for training medical personnel. In particular, foreign specialists will conduct practical master classes at Kazakh clinics.
