A man in Karaganda was sentenced for illegally keeping 35 birds of prey. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.

The district court of Kazybek bi district in Karaganda considered a criminal case on the fact of illegal acquisition and keeping of rare animals. The man illegally purchased rare and endangered birds and kept them in his yard.

According to the court, in 2017 he opened an Instagram page "tanat.falcons". There he posted publications about national hunting using birds of prey, as well as information about care, keeping and treatment of birds of prey.

The birds of prey were delivered to the convicted man by unknown persons. The man organized a place for keeping the birds. According to the charges, from 2017 to February 5, 2026, a total of 35 hunting birds of prey were delivered to him.

On February 5, during a search at the specified address, 35 birds of prey were found and confiscated without proper permits. It was established that of the 35 birds, 31 belonged to the "lashyn" (saker falcon) species, 1 to the "sapsan" (peregrine falcon) species, 2 to the "burkit" (golden eagle) species, and 1 to the "karshyga-tuygyn" (goshawk) species.

The court sentenced the convict to 1 year and 6 months of restriction of freedom and deprivation of the right to engage in activities related to animals whose use is prohibited for 1 year. According to the amnesty law, the man was released from serving his sentence. The verdict has not entered into legal force.
