A complex heart surgery was performed on a 19-day-old infant in the city of Karaganda. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.

According to Sputnik Kazakhstan, which refers to the official website of the regional akimat, the baby had a congenital heart defect. In addition, an open arterial duct and a ventricular septal defect were detected.

Previously, the infant had also undergone surgery due to a concomitant pathology of the gastrointestinal tract.

"For the Karaganda region, this was an important step in the development of pediatric cardiac surgery. Such operations have not been performed in the region for many years. And the purpose of this master class is to create the opportunity to perform operations here, in Karaganda, and not to lose time on transporting them to the republican center," said Ganibek Akzhanov, head of the pediatric cardiac surgery department of the regional center.

Thus, local doctors are gaining experience and will in the future provide such medical care to newborns themselves.
