Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks with US President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The meeting in the Kremlin lasted more than three hours and was devoted to ending the war in Ukraine. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
Putin's aide Yuri Ushakov called the talks "substantive, constructive, extremely frank and trust-based."
The American side presented several ideas on possible ways of settlement. However, the specific content of the proposals has not yet been disclosed.
According to the White House, the sides discussed "concrete plans" for further steps to end the war. They are expected to be announced in the coming weeks, Reuters reports.
Ushakov said Moscow had conveyed to Washington its assessment of the situation at the front and again stressed the need to eliminate, as the Russian side claims, the "root causes of the conflict."
Earlier, US President Donald Trump said Witkoff and Kushner were bringing a proposal to Moscow to end the war. The American president called it an "idea for peace" but did not reveal details.
Thus, it is still unknown whether the American initiative envisages territorial concessions from Ukraine or other controversial conditions. The specific parameters of the plan have not been officially reported.
After the meeting with Putin, Witkoff and Kushner headed to Kyiv, where they are to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. According to DW, this will be their first visit to the Ukrainian capital within the current negotiation process.
Zelensky earlier stated his readiness for a "substantive conversation" with American representatives. He also reported Ukraine's temporary refusal to strike Moscow during their visit.
Despite statements about useful and substantive talks, no concrete agreements on ending the conflict have been announced yet.
Moscow and Kyiv still hold different positions on key issues. At the same time, Washington hopes to continue contacts with both sides and present further steps in the coming weeks.
