Portugal has topped the ranking of the heaviest drinking countries in the European Union, based on fresh Eurostat data for last year. The study assessed the percentage of residents over 16 who consume alcoholic beverages daily. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.

The top five states with the highest share of daily alcohol consumers included:

The EU average for this indicator is 4.8%. The statistics also revealed a strong gender gap: regular alcohol consumption (at least once a month) is prevalent among 56.5% of men and only 35.9% of women. Meanwhile, 19.2% of Europeans drink alcohol every week, and 21.8% — once a month.

Thus, Portugal leads in daily alcohol consumption in the EU, where the average stands at 4.8%. The gender gap is significant: men consume alcohol more often than women. The share of those who drink alcohol weekly is 19.2%, and once a month — 21.8%.
