Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that Yerevan does not agree with the approach that relations within the Eurasian Economic Union should be 'exclusive' in nature. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Novosti-Armenia.
He made this statement while commenting on Russian statements about the possible holding of a referendum in Armenia on the choice between the EAEU and the European Union.
"There is an expectation to have exclusive relations, to which we have already said we do not agree," Pashinyan said at a briefing.
According to him, Armenia intends to continue diversifying its foreign economic ties regardless of the current political situation.
"In any case, we must diversify our relations, and even if we now return to the initial situation, our agenda will not change, because the problem arises when our export or import depends, or significantly depends, on one link," the prime minister said.
In the spring of 2025, Armenia adopted a law on starting the process of the country's accession to the European Union.
At the same time, the republic's authorities stated that they intend to continue rapprochement with the EU while maintaining membership in the EAEU as long as these two directions remain compatible.
Pashinyan had previously noted that if combining integration with the EU and participation in the EAEU becomes impossible, the final decision should be made with the participation of the country's citizens.
The Russian side, in turn, has repeatedly stated that Armenia's simultaneous membership in the EAEU and the EU is incompatible. Moscow called on Yerevan to decide on its further foreign economic course and hold a referendum on this issue.
Pashinyan, however, said that holding such a vote now is premature. In his opinion, it will be possible to return to discussing the referendum after Armenia submits an official application for EU membership.
