Armenia understands that it cannot be a member of both the Eurasian Economic Union and the European Union at the same time. This was stated by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan at an expanded meeting of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council in Cholpon-Ata. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.

According to Pashinyan, Armenia took into account the statement of the leaders of the four EAEU member states dated May 29, 2026. It expresses support for holding a referendum in Armenia on joining the EAEU.

He recalled that in 2025 Armenia adopted a law on joining the European Union. "The strategic goal of adopting this law is to create an alternative for our country. We understand that it is impossible to be a member of both the EAEU and the EU. However, the very adoption of this law does not mean that Armenia today has the opportunity to become an EU member," Pashinyan said.

Pashinyan noted that in Armenia's relations with the European Union there are no obligations that contradict its status in the EAEU. "I must say that in the current relations between Armenia and the European Union there are no legal, economic or political obligations that would contradict our status in the EAEU and within its framework," the Armenian Prime Minister said.

On May 29, at the EAEU summit in Astana, the leaders of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan adopted a joint statement expressing a common position on the need to hold a nationwide referendum in Armenia on joining the EU or remaining in the EAEU.
