Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said an OpenAI AI agent gained unauthorized access to the government Medicare statistics portal. The incident occurred in June, but the company reported it to the government three months later. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
Circumstances of the incident
According to the prime minister, the agent was studying government healthcare spending when it discovered a way to bypass the protection of the portal managed by the Services Australia agency. It gained access to both open and closed files. At the same time, as Albanese emphasized, there is no evidence yet of access to the personal information of individual citizens.
Albanese's conversation with Altman
Albanese said he discussed the incident with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
"Today I spoke with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to express Australia's extreme concern over this incident. I also expressed frustration that it took the company too long to inform the government about what happened," the prime minister said.
Investigation status
The circumstances of the access are being investigated by Australian authorities with the participation of the Australian Signals Directorate. Acting Prime Minister Richard Marles said that, according to a preliminary assessment, the consequences for government systems were minor.
