New York police arrested the suspect after a search. The attack occurred around 7:00 p.m. local time (0:00 BST). Amtrak police reported that the suspect was emotionally unstable.

The incident occurred ahead of US President Donald Trump's visit to New York on Monday to watch the New York Knicks game in the NBA finals. The city has increased security measures.

Penn Station is located directly under Madison Square Garden, where the third game of the NBA finals between the Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs will take place on Monday evening. Before the game, city authorities announced new security measures, including a ban on bags and the cancellation of the fan zone outside the arena due to Trump's presence. Mayor Zohran Mamdani will also attend.

The injured were taken to Bellevue Hospital. Law enforcement described the attack as a random act of violence.
