The New York City Council has passed a ban on the city's well-known horse-drawn carriages starting in June 2028, a proposal backed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing BBC News.
While animal rights activists and officials have pushed for the ban for years, the final catalyst was the death of an 18-year-old earlier this year, who died after a carriage horse bolted and caused a fatal fall.
The BBC's Madeline Halpert spoke to New York City tourists, residents and horse carriage workers to get their perspectives on the industry and the ban.
