Kazakh freestyle wrestler Nurasyl Asambek (57 kg) won a bronze medal on the penultimate day of the Youth World Championships in Greco-Roman, freestyle, and women's wrestling, held in Bratislava, Slovakia. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
Asambek started by defeating Ukrainian Abbas Huseynov 4:2 and Frenchman Gaspard Camille Cheynua 11:0. After losing to American Michael Cortes 0:6 in the quarterfinals, he beat Chinese Chengtao Wang 10:5 in the consolation round. Then, in the bronze medal match, he defeated Uzbek Ulugbek Rashidov 13:6.
Another Kazakh freestyle wrestler, Beibarys Yergali (92 kg), began his path to the third-place bout with a win over Swiss Jacek Fudaley 9:2. He then beat Ukrainian Yehor Horokh by split decision (3:3). The semifinal against Georgian Sandro Kurashvili did not go Yergali's way – 1:6. He lost the bronze medal match to American James Merle Mastny 2:3, finishing fourth.
Yeraly Askerbek (65 kg) and Aibek Kaliakhmet (79 kg), having lost in the early stages, did not participate in the medal distribution today.
Ahead of the final day of the championship, the Kazakh team has four medals. Gold for Greco-Roman wrestler Kyzybek Kalmagambetov in the up to 67 kg category, silver for freestyle wrestler Bekasyl Asambek (61 kg), bronze for Uldana Tileukhan (68 kg) and Nurasyl Asambek.
The world championship under the auspices of the International Wrestling Federation (UWW), which is concluding in the Slovak capital, features 700 young athletes. They compete for 120 medals in three wrestling styles: Greco-Roman, freestyle, and women's.
Kazakhstan is represented in Bratislava by 30 athletes – 20 boys and 10 girls. The tournament will end on August 23.
