The main republican mosque of Kazakhstan has been given a new name — 'Nursultan Mosque' (Nūrsūltan meşіtі), the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Kazakhstan (SAMK) reported. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
'In this regard, this name is being introduced into official use,' SAMK said.
The administration noted that the main republican mosque is a common spiritual abode not only of the capital but of the entire Muslim community of Kazakhstan.
According to SAMK, the mosque serves to strengthen national unity, promote peace and harmony, spread the values of goodness and mercy, and support good initiatives based on faith and morality.
'Under the new name, the main republican mosque will continue to serve the spiritual life of the people, contribute to strengthening mutual respect and solidarity in society, preserving traditional spiritual values, and developing good initiatives,' SAMK stated.
The central mosque in Astana opened in August 2022. The initiator of its construction was the first president of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev.
Earlier, Kursiv LifeStyle reported that there is an observation deck at the top of the main republican mosque, located on one of the minarets. It offers a panoramic view of Astana. The mosque itself is considered the largest in Central Asia and attracts visitors with its scale, architecture, and interiors.
Significance of the Mosque
The main republican mosque holds a special status as the main mosque of Kazakhstan. In addition to religious ceremonies, it serves as a venue for cultural and educational events. The mosque houses a library, conference halls, and a museum.

Public Reaction
The new name has sparked mixed reactions in society. Some citizens supported the decision, while others criticized the mosque's association with a political figure. However, SAMK emphasized that the name does not detract from the mosque's spiritual mission.
