The Netherlands has performed its first euthanasia on a child under 12 after new rules expanded the possibility of the procedure to minor patients. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Dutch News.
According to national broadcaster NOS, the procedure was carried out late last year on a terminally ill child. The child's age, diagnosis, and other details have not been disclosed.
Health Minister Sophie Hermans said a special commission examined the circumstances, interviewed the doctor who arranged the procedure, and submitted its findings to the supervisory authority.
The new rules took effect in the Netherlands in 2024. Euthanasia is now permitted for children aged one to 12 if they are incurably ill and suffering "unbearably without hope of recovery."
Previously, the option was only available for infants under one year and adolescents over 12.
Under the law, the decision to proceed is made by parents and treating physicians. There must be no prospect of improvement even with palliative care.
The Netherlands was the first country in the world to legalize euthanasia as a medical procedure, with the relevant law taking effect in 2002.
Authorities estimate that cases of euthanasia for children aged one to 12 will be rare, not exceeding five per year.
