A week after the catastrophic flash floods along the Nepal-Tibet border, more than 1,000 people have died and nearly 4,000 are still missing, according to Nepal's disaster agency. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing BBC News.
The BBC has travelled to the district of Betrawati in Nepal, as some people return to their homes to see the devastation caused by the floods. South Asia correspondent Azadeh Moshiri spoke to a local, who is still waiting for his wife's body to be retrieved as rescue efforts continue.
Villagers say the flood completely submerged the village. "Nothing but mud and silt," they describe. Rescue teams are still conducting search operations, but few have been found.
This flood is one of the largest in the border region between Nepal and Tibet. Local authorities have mobilized all resources to help those affected. International organizations are also joining the relief efforts.
The death toll may rise as search operations continue. The Nepalese government has declared a state of emergency in the disaster zone.
