German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and US President Donald Trump held a telephone conversation to discuss the situation in Ukraine. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.
The call was announced by German government spokesman Stefan Cornelius.
"The Federal Chancellor Merz spoke by telephone with President Trump. The parties recalled the terrorist attacks in the United States on September 11, 2001, whose 25th anniversary was marked last week. The Federal Chancellor and the President discussed further steps aimed at ending the war in Ukraine," Cornelius said.
According to the German government spokesman, Merz and Trump also raised the approval in the United States of a bill envisaging new sanctions against Russia.
"In addition, the situation in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea was discussed. The parties agreed that both sea routes must be opened as soon as possible," Cornelius added.
On Thursday, the US House of Representatives approved a bill on "hell" sanctions against Russia. The final document is being sent to Trump for signature.
Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said the Kremlin is monitoring the US bill on new sanctions against Russia and considers these actions an unfriendly step.
