The Mexican village of Guajes de Ayala in Guerrero state was attacked by cartel drones. The assault occurred during the 2026 World Cup. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Associated Press.

The attack began at 6 a.m. on Wednesday as the sun rose over the mountains. The cartel La Nueva Familia Michoacana dropped bombs from drones. Marilu Solorio, 24, hid in an abandoned clinic with 70 other women, children and elderly. She said: "While some are celebrating goals, others are getting massacred by drones carrying bombs."

Villagers had warned authorities for weeks about the cartel threat but received no help. As World Cup festivities engulfed major cities like Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey, police forces were deployed there. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum mobilized 100,000 security forces to secure the World Cup.

Mexican security analyst David Saucedo said: "There was heavy security in Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey. But that left a number of regions unprotected."

In northern Sinaloa, weekend clashes left a naval officer and 10 suspected gang members dead. In Veracruz, the body of a kidnapped journalist was found. In Chiapas, eight bodies were found with cartel messages.
