In the Mangistau region, three adult patients hospitalized with botulism after consuming smoked fish have been discharged home. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.

The regional multidisciplinary hospital said the patients completed their treatment. The information was distributed by Lada.kz with reference to the medical institution.

How the poisoning occurred

The poisoning occurred on September 17 in the Munaily district of the Mangistau region. Four participants of a family feast consumed cold-smoked fish, after which they developed symptoms of botulism. All were hospitalized, and the diagnosis was confirmed.

Among the victims was a child who died on October 6.

Results of the epidemiological investigation

During the epidemiological investigation, it was found that the fish was purchased at an unidentified location along the highway. After purchase, it was stored at home in a refrigerator and then served at a family event.

Botulism is a severe disease caused by the toxin of the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. The toxin can accumulate in improperly processed or stored food products, including smoked and canned fish. The first symptoms of the disease usually appear between several hours and several days after consuming the product.

Warning from health authorities

Specialists recommend purchasing fish and other food products only from official retail outlets. The quality and storage conditions of products bought at unidentified locations along the highway cannot be verified, which increases the risk of botulism.

In addition, strict sanitary requirements must be observed when preparing smoked and canned products at home. Long-term storage of a product in a refrigerator can also be dangerous.

Hospital statement

The regional multidisciplinary hospital confirmed that three adult patients completed treatment and were discharged home. However, the death of a child after the family feast underscores the severity of this case.

To prevent botulism poisoning, it is necessary to purchase food products from reliable places, store them properly, and observe hygiene requirements during preparation. If the first symptoms appear, you should immediately consult a doctor.
