A memorial to the 16 people killed in the derailment and crash of Lisbon's Gloria funicular, an iconic streetcar, was inaugurated on the first anniversary of the accident. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Associated Press.
The ceremony took place on Thursday, Sept. 3, 2026, and was attended by religious, military and political officials. Lisbon patriarch bishop Rui Valério was also present.
The accident occurred on Sept. 4, 2025, when the Gloria funicular derailed and crashed, killing 16 people and injuring several others. It was one of the deadliest incidents on Lisbon's iconic tram network.
Following the crash, the Gloria funicular service was suspended. A year later, there are still no promises to restore it. Additionally, on Oct. 30, 2025, another tram — the Bica funicular — derailed and crashed, also causing multiple fatalities and injuries. The Bica funicular remains out of service.
The memorial inauguration was held to honor the victims and support their families. However, the future of the tram service remains uncertain. City authorities emphasize the need for enhanced safety measures but have not provided a timeline.
Lisbon's historic trams are a major tourist attraction, but recent accidents have raised safety concerns. Residents and visitors alike await the resumption of service, but for now, it remains only a hope.
