The government approved an 881 billion tenge investment agreement to build a 700 MW power plant in Kurchatov. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.
Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov signed the relevant resolution. The agreement was concluded between the Ministry of Energy and GRES Kurchatov LLP. The project involves the construction of a condensing power plant in the city of Kurchatov, Abai region.
The new station will become the energy basis for the further development of Kurchatov. It hosts major scientific infrastructure facilities – the National Nuclear Center, the Nuclear Technology Park, research reactors, laboratories, and the Kazakhstani thermonuclear tokamak KTM.
Project Cost and Capacity
The cost of the new station is 881 billion tenge. It is planned to commission two power units with a capacity of 350 MW each in stages until 2032. After commissioning, the power plant will be able to generate up to 5 billion kWh of electricity per year. The project envisages the creation of about 4.4 thousand jobs.
Environmental Requirements
The facility will be equipped with modern steam power equipment designed to operate under high pressure and temperature using "clean coal" technologies. To reduce the negative impact on the environment, the project includes gas treatment, emission filtration, and dust suppression systems in accordance with the requirements of the Environmental Code and best available techniques.
