Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo ended his last World Cup campaign after a 1-0 defeat to Spain in the round of 16 of the 2026 tournament. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Associated Press.

The match was played at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The 39-year-old Ronaldo told reporters after the game: "I leave with a clear conscience. I gave everything. This was my last World Cup, but I am proud of the team."

Ronaldo scored five goals in the tournament, helping Portugal advance from the group stage. However, he failed to score against Spain in the round of 16. He said the decision to retire from World Cup football was made beforehand: "I knew this was my last World Cup. I enjoyed every moment."

Portugal coach Roberto Martinez praised Ronaldo's contribution: "Cristiano is a special player. He gave us so much. We will miss him."

Ronaldo holds the record for most goals in World Cup history with 22. He participated in six World Cups (2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022, 2026). The 2026 tournament was his sixth.

After the match, Ronaldo was seen with tears in his eyes but composed himself. He said: "I didn't cry. I have to be strong. It's part of sports."

Spain will face Argentina in the quarterfinals. Ronaldo will continue his club career with Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr.
