Scientists have found that the popular sports supplement creatine can protect brain cells from damage during chronic colitis. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
The study was published in the journal Brain, Behaviour, and Immunity. Scientists found that intestinal inflammation reduces energy levels in the hippocampus and causes neuroinflammation, leading to the death of neurons. However, daily intake of creatine restored the brain's energy balance and stopped inflammatory processes.
How the experiment was conducted
The experiment was conducted on Wistar rats, which were divided into four test groups. The first was given ordinary drinking water, the second — water with added creatine. In the third and fourth groups, chronic colitis was chemically induced using dextran sulfate sodium in drinking water, while the fourth group simultaneously received a daily dose of creatine.
To assess the preventive effect of the supplement, creatine intake with water began 10 days before the induction of intestinal inflammation and continued throughout the entire observation period.
Study of the hippocampus
After the experiment, scientists studied the hippocampus — the part of the brain responsible for memory and emotions. They checked how well neurons were preserved in males and females, how they conduct electrical signals, and also measured energy levels in cells and markers of inflammation.
As a result, it turned out that creatine showed itself as a promising defender of the brain in gastrointestinal diseases. It selectively restored damaged neurons and neutralized inflammatory signals.
Don't rush to the pharmacy
But it is too early to rush to the pharmacy for the supplement — scientists have yet to check whether this method will work in humans as effectively as in rodents.
Earlier, Kursiv wrote that creatine has also shown promise in the fight against cancer.
