Contact lenses must be removed not only before sleep but also before showering. Ophthalmologists explain this with several reasons. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.

Even ordinary water can be dangerous

Even ordinary tap water can contain microorganisms dangerous to the eyes. One of them is Acanthamoeba, a microscopic organism found in water and soil that can cause a serious corneal infection.

Lenses can change shape

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that when soft lenses come into contact with water, they can swell, change shape and fit more tightly against the eye. This increases the risk of damage to the corneal surface and makes it easier for infection to penetrate.

Acanthamoeba keratitis

One possible infection is Acanthamoeba keratitis. It is rare but difficult and long to treat. The disease can cause severe pain, redness, light sensitivity and blurred vision. In severe cases, it leads to serious vision impairment and sometimes requires a corneal transplant.

What to do if you showered in lenses

If a person accidentally showers in lenses, the CDC recommends removing them as soon as possible. Daily disposable lenses should be thrown away, while reusable ones should be cleaned and disinfected with a special solution according to the instructions. Lenses must not be rinsed with tap water.

If pain, redness, light sensitivity or blurred vision appear after contact with water, you must remove the lenses and urgently consult an ophthalmologist.

Prevention

Therefore, it is better to remove lenses before showering and swimming, even if contact with water seems brief.
