Congo's Ebola outbreak has resulted in 100 deaths out of 550 cases in less than a month. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Associated Press.
According to the latest situation report late Monday, as of Sunday there were 550 confirmed cases, 101 deaths, and 19 recoveries. However, the number of cases is believed to be higher because the outbreak was confirmed weeks late. The response has also been challenging because there is no approved vaccine or treatment for the virus.
Attacks on health workers from angry residents, skepticism among some locals, and armed conflict in hot spots continue to challenge efforts to stop the spread.
The latest Ebola outbreak is caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus, which has no approved vaccine or treatment, unlike the Zaire virus responsible for most of Congo's past 16 outbreaks.
