At least 2,000 people have died in Congo's Ebola outbreak, the fastest growing on record. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Associated Press.
According to the latest government data, the outbreak has recorded a total of 4,381 confirmed cases, including 2,011 deaths. A total of 704 patients are currently in admission and isolation.
Outbreak characteristics
The Ebola outbreak declared on May 15 is unlike most previous ones because the rare Bundibugyo virus responsible for it has no approved vaccines or treatments. The World Health Organization said on Monday that it started in February, long before authorities detected it in one of Congo's most remote and vulnerable areas.
Experts' concerns
WHO experts express concern over the rapid spread of the outbreak, especially given the lack of a vaccine. This complicates the work of health workers at treatment centers in Bunia, a city in northeastern Congo, where they care for patients.
Photographs taken by Associated Press photographer Dieudonne Dirole show health workers in protective gear at an Ebola treatment center in Bunia. They are caring for patients, cleaning facilities, and trying to prevent the spread of the infection.
Spread of the infection
Congolese authorities say they are taking all necessary measures to stop the spread of the infection. However, the lack of a vaccine and the remoteness of the region hamper the fight against the epidemic. WHO and other international organizations are providing assistance to the Congolese government.
This outbreak places a huge strain on Congo's healthcare system. Experts emphasize that urgent international intervention is needed to prevent further spread of the infection.
