A resident of Kokshetau became a defendant in a criminal case over the theft of jewelry worth 3.4 million tenge after finding a bag with jewelry in a yard. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
According to the police department of Akmola region, a woman reported the theft after forgetting her bag on a bench in the yard of a house on Abylai Khan Avenue. When she returned shortly after, she found her belongings missing.
Police studied footage from surveillance cameras installed in the area. The video allowed them to trace the events and identify the woman who took the abandoned bag. It turned out that she waited for the owner to return for some time, but then took the bag with her. On her way home, she discarded the bag, keeping the phone, watch, and jewelry.
The next day, she pawned one of the gold rings for 150,000 tenge. According to her, she spent the money on food and medicine.
"A pre-trial investigation into the theft is underway, and investigative actions are ongoing," the regional police department reported.
The police reminded that appropriation of found property is also considered theft and entails liability under the law. Found items must be returned to the owner or handed over to the nearest police station.
