A Kokshetau resident is suspected of stealing an acquaintance's mobile phone and transferring 1.99 million tenge held in a bank deposit to his own account. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.
According to the regional police, the total damage caused to the victim exceeded 2.6 million tenge.
A 21-year-old city resident said that in July an acquaintance stole his phone worth 660 thousand tenge.
"Later, the suspect, using the banking application on the phone, transferred 1 million 990 thousand tenge kept in the victim's deposit to his own account," the statement says.
During operational search activities, police identified the suspect and detained him.
An investigation is currently underway into the incident.
Police urged citizens not to give strangers access to smartphones and banking applications, to use strong passwords, and to enable additional methods of confirming financial transactions.
One should also not hand over a phone and banking data to an acquaintance for uncontrolled use.
