Guterres spoke at a press conference on July 29, 2026, after a meeting with Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman at a UN compound in the Nicosia airport area, inside the UN-controlled buffer zone. He expressed hope for a revival of peace talks on Cyprus.
Cyprus has been divided between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots since 1974. The UN has made numerous attempts to resolve the issue, but so far without success. Guterres stressed that given the region's instability, resolving the Cyprus division is critical.
