At least seven people have died after a passenger ferry capsized off the coast of Northern Cyprus, with 23 others still missing. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
Incident details
The vessel FILOJET departed from the port of Kyrenia and was heading to the Turkish port of Tashucu in Mersin province. On board were 259 passengers and eight crew members.
Shortly after leaving port, the ferry began taking on water for unknown reasons. This occurred approximately four nautical miles from the coast. The ship then capsized.
Rescue operation
Published footage shows passengers in life jackets on the hull of the overturned ferry awaiting help.
"We found 237 people alive. Seven people died, and 23 are still being searched for," said Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman.
The rescue operation involves nine coast guard vessels, a civilian passenger ship, and two helicopters. Specialists are also using additional equipment to search for people who may remain inside the ferry.
Kazakhstan MFA statement
Kazakhstan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that, according to preliminary data, no citizens of the country were on board the stricken vessel.
"According to preliminary data, there were no citizens of the Republic of Kazakhstan on board the ship that sank off the coast of Cyprus. Kazakh diplomats continue to verify the information," the press service of the Kazakh MFA said.
Weather conditions
The day before, stormy weather was observed in Cyprus. However, according to Erhurman, weather conditions were considered suitable for sailing when the ferry departed. The exact cause of the disaster is yet to be determined.
