Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani ruled Qatar from 1995 to 2013. He made significant contributions to the country's economic and political development. Under his leadership, Qatar began to play an important role on the world stage. In 2013, he voluntarily abdicated the throne, handing power to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
