Kazakhstan's Ministry of Defense has published the list of servicemen tragically killed during exercises on the Caspian Sea. The list contains 12 names in total, including a senior lieutenant and 11 sailors. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
On September 24, during exercises of the Naval Forces on the coast of the Caspian Sea, the weather sharply deteriorated and the wind intensified. The servicemen were carried out to sea. According to updated data from the akimat of Mangystau Region, 17 people ended up in the water: 12 died, three were rescued, and the search for two others continues.
A government commission headed by Deputy Prime Minister Kanat Bozumbayev is working at the scene. He ordered that the search be conducted around the clock and that assistance be provided to the families of the victims. Investigators are establishing the circumstances of the tragedy: a criminal case has been opened over the deaths of the servicemen.
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev declared September 25 a day of national mourning.
