In the Karakiya district of the Mangystau region, 173 sturgeon carcasses were found on the Caspian coast, according to the regional fisheries inspection. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.
The carcasses were discovered on October 20 during monitoring along a 15-kilometer stretch of the coast.
"The fish may have been washed ashore due to strong southerly winds. All 173 fish were severely decomposed, making sampling impossible," said Konarbay Bazarbayev, head of the fisheries inspection department for the Mangystau region.
Monitoring is still ongoing.
"Monitoring is being conducted from Cape Suye, which borders Turkmenistan, to the middle of Aktau city. A team of 12 people checks daily. No other carcasses have been found," said Konarbay Bazarbayev.
Ecologists, representatives of the akimat, and police were called to the scene.
Ecologists took samples of seawater.
Currently, the fish carcasses have been buried in a designated area, and the coast has been cleaned.
