Karl Stefanovic is leaving Nine immediately, the network said in a statement this morning. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing The Guardian.
It follows days of controversy in which the highly paid Today presenter used his independent podcast series to interview British far-right activist Tommy Robinson.
“Nine Entertainment and Stefanovic have agreed that it is no longer possible for him to continue hosting Today at the same time as his independent podcast,” a Nine Entertainment spokesperson said.
“While Karl and Nine had previously agreed he would leave Today at the end of this year, they have subsequently decided he will leave the network immediately.”
Karl Stefanovic was one of Australia's most prominent television hosts, having hosted the Today show since 2005. His departure is a major change for Nine, as Today has been a key player in the morning television market.
The interview with Tommy Robinson drew widespread criticism, as Robinson is known for his anti-Islam views and ties to far-right extremist groups. Stefanovic conducted the interview on his independent podcast, which was seen as conflicting with Nine's editorial policies.
Nine Entertainment's statement said the agreement between Stefanovic and the network was "mutual." However, experts noted that public pressure may have influenced the decision.
It is not yet known who will replace Stefanovic. Nine announced it has begun the process of finding a new host.
The story has caused significant resonance in Australian media, with many experts saying it raises important questions about the boundary between journalism and personal opinion.
Karl Stefanovic has not yet commented on the situation. There is no information about his future plans.
Nine Entertainment's shares fell after the news, but experts consider this a temporary phenomenon.
The Today show's ratings have been declining in recent years, and Stefanovic's departure may change this trend.
This event is one of the biggest changes in the Australian media market. Many experts say this situation could also affect other television hosts.
