Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has pledged levies starting on 8 September on US steel, dairy, appliances and electronics. Trump tariffs went into effect on Saturday, hitting Canadian wine, dairy, cement, clothing and hockey equipment.

Michael Saifer, general manager of Lind Furniture in Ontario, says sales dropped after Trump took office. "As soon as there were tariffs in the air, people put purchases on hold," he told the BBC. He worries Canada may lose the trade war: "I don't know that we're going to win a war with them; we may get killed."

The US tariffs apply to about $20bn worth of Canadian exports to the US, roughly 5% of Canada's annual exports to the US. Canada is highly exposed because 70% of its exports go to the US.

Matteo Sgaramella, founder of Toronto-based menswear brand Outclass, notes that US stores ordered products in January, but they will arrive in September with new tariffs. "If I contact them now and tell them they may get an extra 50% bill from UPS, they'll all say 'no way, don't ship it,'" he says. Only 20% of his wholesale and e-commerce sales come from the US: "Big business can always find a way, but small businesses are going to get smashed by this."

Mike Roach and Kim Osgood, owners of Paloma Clothing in Portland, sell pillows designed by Osgood and produced by a Montreal company. These pillows are their best-selling gift item at $59. With new tariffs, the price could rise to $86-$90. Roach says: "Gift items are really price-point sensitive; people have in their mind what they're going to pay for a gift." They will likely hold the original price and hope the "tariff problem" gets worked out.
