Kazakh Greco-Roman wrestler Kazybek Kalmagambetov became the U20 world champion at the tournament held in Bratislava. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.

In the gold medal match, Kalmagambetov defeated Belarusian Mikhail Markovsky with a score of 13:7.

Road to the final

Kalmagambetov successively overcame:

  • 01German Sebastian Wagner – 9:0;
  • 02American Emrin Brian Natter – 1:1 (by judges' decision);
  • 03Egyptian Mohamed Hassan Ahmed Mohamed Abdelrehim – 4:1 (quarterfinal);
  • 04Hungarian Petro Zhitovoz – 7:5 (semifinal).

This is the first medal for our team in Bratislava. And it's gold!

Results of other Kazakhstani wrestlers

Kalmagambetov's teammate Marlan Bakaev (up to 72 kg) failed to reach the bronze match through the repechage rounds. Other Kazakh classic wrestlers Yerassyl Musan (55 kg) and Maxim Ukraintsev (97 kg), having lost in the early stages, also did not qualify for medal contention.

Earlier, Yerkebulan Anapiya (77 kg) lost the bronze medal match to Iranian Amir Mahdi Mohammad Saedi Nave – 3:5.

About the tournament

The world championship under the auspices of the United World Wrestling (UWW), which started in the Slovak capital, brings together about 700 young athletes from around the world. They will compete for 120 medals in three wrestling styles – Greco-Roman, freestyle, and women's wrestling.

Kazakhstan is represented in Bratislava by 30 athletes – 20 boys and 10 girls.
