LINCOLN, Calif. (AP) — Retired feedstore owner Anne Smull was looking forward to voting on Election Day for her current congressman, conservative Republican Kevin Kiley. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Associated Press.
However, Kiley's campaign in the newly created 6th District is not easy. Although Republicans overall won the redistricting process, Kiley faces tough competition from Democrat Richard Pan.
Kiley is a former state legislator, while Pan is a pediatrician and former state senator. Both are candidates for the House of Representatives from California's 6th District in the Nov. 3 election.
During the campaign, Kiley held an event in Citrus Heights on Aug. 5, and Pan in Roseville on Aug. 6. At Kiley's event, Victoria Fochetti-Murray, whose 17-year-old son Tony Rocha was murdered in 2022, also spoke.
Smull said she supports Kiley because of his conservative views and tough stance on crime. But the new district boundaries have changed the composition of voters, creating additional difficulties for Kiley.
According to experts, although the district was redrawn in favor of Republicans, Kiley's victory is not guaranteed. Moreover, Pan's medical background and local popularity may give him an additional advantage.
Ahead of the election, both candidates are raising issues of economy, healthcare, and public safety, trying to attract voters. Kiley emphasizes conservative values, while Pan emphasizes Democratic ones.
