An Israeli strike on Gaza killed a Palestinian aid official and three others just before the kickoff of the Egypt-Argentina World Cup match. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Associated Press.

According to local health officials, the strike occurred in the Sabra neighborhood of Gaza City at dusk. Killed were Mohamed al-Wahidi, director of public relations for the Egyptian Committee, 10-year-old Hamza al-Deri, his 8-year-old brother Fari, and the car's driver, Ahmed Daghmush. Dr. Mohamed Abu Selmiya, director of Shifa Hospital, confirmed the four bodies were received.

The Israeli military said al-Wahidi was not the target, and the strike was aimed at a Hamas militant. They are checking if Daghmush was the target. Daghmush was a taxi driver not known to be affiliated with any militant group, Abu Selmiya said.

The Egyptian Committee is the relief arm of the Egyptian government, providing food, shelter and other aid to Palestinians in Gaza. The committee also organized the initiative to set up screens across Gaza to watch soccer matches.

Many in the Palestinian diaspora live across the border in Egypt, which was a key mediator of the Israel-Hamas ceasefire. Egypt's coach Hossam Hassan has highlighted the plight of Palestinians, and their fanbase in Gaza has grown.
