Nicaraguan authorities announced the severance of diplomatic relations with Italy following statements by Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, who demanded the extradition of Alessio Casimirri, a former member of the Red Brigades terrorist organization. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.

In an official statement, the Nicaraguan Foreign Ministry described the remarks of the Italian diplomat as "unfounded, aggressive, and irresponsible." Managua stated that Tajani's words were perceived as an insult to the people and government of the country, and the decision to break diplomatic ties was called an expression of national sovereignty.

The conflict was triggered by a speech by the Italian Foreign Minister in Madrid. Antonio Tajani recalled the murder of former Italian Prime Minister Aldo Moro in 1978 and again called on Nicaragua to extradite Alessio Casimirri, whom Italian authorities consider one of the participants in the politician's kidnapping and murder.

Casimirri was sentenced in absentia in Italy to six life terms for involvement in terrorist acts, including the attack on Aldo Moro's security and his murder. He left Italy in the early 1980s and has lived in Nicaragua since 1983, where he obtained citizenship and runs restaurant and fishing businesses.

Nicaraguan authorities also criticized the statements of the Italian Foreign Minister, accusing him of "European arrogance." The statement noted that the demand to extradite Casimirri and public assessments of the country were a sign of disrespect for its sovereignty.

The Nicaraguan Foreign Ministry emphasized that previously relations between the two states were built on mutual respect and understanding.

"Today, faced with this shameful situation, we deeply regret that such aggressions occur in contradiction to the historical ties between Italy and us, as well as other brotherly countries, and we hope that better times will come, which humanity so desperately needs and longs for," the Nicaraguan Foreign Ministry statement said.

The ministry reported that it has officially notified the Italian side of the termination of diplomatic relations and has begun the necessary procedures to implement this decision.
