One of Spain's deadliest wildfires on record killed 12 people overnight into Friday as soaring temperatures grip much of the country. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Associated Press.

Several victims of the fire in the southern province of Almeria, a popular holiday destination, were found inside burnt-out vehicles and were thought to have died while trying to flee the flames. Researchers say extreme events like this one are a "new reality" and a consequence of climate change.

Hundreds of firefighters backed by helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft struggled Saturday to contain the blaze, which affected areas near the town of Bejar. Many victims were trapped in their cars while trying to escape. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the fire, but the extreme heatwave has exacerbated conditions.
