From 1 December 2026, women in Spain will be able to take separate sick leave for menopause. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.

The reform does not cover all cases of menopause, but only diagnosed pathologies associated with secondary menopausal disorder. To obtain sick leave, a doctor must confirm that the woman's condition prevents her from working.

The new measure will allow women to receive benefits from the second day of incapacity and will not require a minimum insurance period.

During menopause, women may experience hot flashes, sleep disturbances, severe fatigue and concentration problems.

To get sick leave, a worker must consult a doctor in the public health system. The specialist must conduct a medical assessment, establish the presence of a disabling pathology and issue a certificate of incapacity for work.

According to Euronews, there is no separate sick leave for pathologies related to menopause in Germany, Italy, Greece, Portugal and Turkey. In some of these countries, women can take regular sick leave if symptoms interfere with work, but there is no special regulation for such conditions.

Spain already introduced separate sick leave for incapacity due to painful menstruation in 2023. The new reform expands measures to protect women's health.

Earlier, Kursiv Health wrote that ASR developed new guidelines for the treatment of hot flashes and night sweats during menopause.
