Tehran has started a funeral procession for slain Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Associated Press.

The procession is taking place at Islamic Revolution Square. Attending the prayers were Khamenei's sons Masoud, Meysam and Mostafa, as well as Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf and Revolutionary Guard head Gen. Ahmad Vahidi. However, Iran's new supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, another of Khamenei's sons, did not attend.

During the ceremony, a mourner wearing a shirt depicting Khamenei wept, while another held a portrait of Khamenei and reacted emotionally. A portrait of new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei was also displayed.

Mourners chanted slogans beneath a billboard depicting Khamenei. A monument depicting Khamenei's clenched fist was also present at the square.

Following Khamenei's death, his son Mojtaba Khamenei was elected as Iran's new supreme leader. The decision was made at an emergency meeting of the Assembly of Experts.
