Thousands of mourners gathered near the Imam Ali Shrine, waving Shiite religious flags and portraits of Khamenei. In Karbala, mourners performed ritual self-flagellation with chains outside the Imam Hussein Shrine on the eve of the funeral ceremonies. An Iraqi Shiite soldier also chanted slogans during the event.
