A 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia's Sulawesi island on Tuesday, June 16, 2026. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Associated Press.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was centered 43 kilometers (27 miles) east-southeast of Palu, at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles). The shaking lasted more than a minute and was followed by strong aftershocks.
At least 32 people were injured, eight of them seriously, and 109 people were displaced. The hardest-hit area was Sigi regency, where eight people sustained serious injuries, according to Abdul Muhari, spokesperson for the National Disaster Management Agency.
Several hospitals in Palu evacuated patients outdoors, some with IV drips, as a precaution. The earthquake damaged buildings and infrastructure. Four regencies with a combined population of 1.3 million have yet to be fully assessed.
The region was devastated by a quake and tsunami eight years ago. In 2018, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake and tsunami in Palu killed more than 4,000 people.
